Ashdod Port to invest ILS 412 million in an innovative array

The Board of Directors of Ashdod Port Company approved an additional investment by port management of ILS 412 million in Platform 21 for equipment, acquisition and conversion into a semi-automatic container platform. This is an additional decision that is intended to prepare Ashdod Port for the expected competition with the opening of the Southern Port in another three years. This investment is in addition to previous decisions made by the company's Board of Directors for investments totaling about ILS one billion that also making the draft deeper and reinforcing the platform. These investments were intended to prepare Platform 21 for mega container ships and for future atomization processes for container unloading and transportation.
 
Among other things, the Port will purchase electrified rubber-tired gantry (ERTG) cranes at a cost of ILS 157 million. As such the Board of Directors of Ashdod Port adopted the green option and abandoned other options that were at their disposal for purchasing cranes with other polluting technology. It was also decided to purchase 4 STS (ship to shore) cranes at a cost of ILS 220 million with an option for future automatic work. In addition, a transformer room will be built at a cost of ILS 35 million. The total investment is about ILS 412 million. This new equipment will make the container terminal innovative and advanced, combined with processes that allow for automation of the process of unloading containers from the megaships (up to 18,000 TEU) that are expected to dock at the port in the coming years.
 
Chairman of the Board of the Port Company Orna Hozman Bechor said that "the budgetary investments  in Platform 21 are strategic investments to prepare Ashdod Port for the challenges of maritime commerce in the coming years. Port employees get to work with the most advanced equipment and the port customers are entitled to receive the most efficient service. Bringing in innovation, automatic processes and advanced green technologies at Ashdod Port Company will allow us to optimize port services to meet the needs of maritime customers".
