Innovation at Ashdod Port

In the framework of the startup incubator we are integrating 22 startup companies into the Port's activities in five main areas:

  • Operations
  • Logistics
  • Energy
  • Security
  • Cyber
  •

The combination of many years of knowledge about port operation with technological opportunities has opened up new areas of innovation and growth, with unique pilot infrastructure projects that involved a large variety of segments. As the sole national port of the State of Israel, the process is receiving support from the government, as well cooperation with shipping companies and ports around the globe.

Innovative technologies to make our work more efficient

In the framework of the innovation program, 22 startup companies have already been selected to implement the pilot phase of their products at the port. The companies will offer advanced technological solutions that may help make the port's operations more efficient and it will be up to them to demonstrate the feasibility of the project and produce results.

The companies were selected from dozens of candidates who participated in two tenders and they come from the fields of security, energy, logistics and operations.

The companies that were selected are receiving extensive support from the port's staff and have a designated area for experimentation. The objective of the pilot period is to get to know the companies better, so that we can determine whether the products or services that they are offering can help improve the efficiency of the port's operations or reduce

our expenses. The Port Company will have the option of purchasing the products or services from these companies at a discount of 25 percent and to integrate them at the Port.

    Leading change

In order to guarantee the success of the technology integration process of the startup companies, Ashdod Port are going to train port employees to be innovation agents. The innovation agents will be the technology integrators at the company and they will also have the opportunity to become entrepreneurs themselves and to raise problems that can be solved at the Port Company or through startup companies that the port will help establish.

The technological incubator of the port industry

In the beginning of 2021 a unique technological incubator will be established at Ashdod Port  to promote innovative technologies in the ports and shipping industry.

In the framework of the incubator the port will support the development and establishment of startup companies, from the concept phase and onwards, providing them with designated experimental infrastructure and optimal conditions to turn their idea into a useful product.

Companies that have an idea, such as developing a unique product to make crane operations more efficient, can be assisted by the technological incubator to receive information that will make their vision a reality. The technological incubator will assist them with understanding the needs of the international port market and they will meet professionals with extensive knowledge in the field, who will accompany them along the way.

As the process moves forward, the port will be among the investors and owners of the startup companies, helping them sell the product or service that they are offering to ports and shipping companies around the globe. As such Ashdod Port, already the largest port in the State of Israel, will also become the most technologically-advanced port in the entire region.

Among the startup companies already operating at the port:

    DockTech

DockTech offers an innovative solution for real-time water-depth measurement and allows ships to be loaded more safely, while also increasing output. Since the company began operating at the port the Sea Department became significantly more efficient. While working the navigators receive a real-time image of what is occurring on the seabed, instead of relying on a seabed survey that was performed a few months earlier. This way they can reduce the safety distance from the draft of the ship to the seabed, which allows for ships to enter the port more quickly and to load an optimal quantity in a safe and efficient manner.

    Naval Dome

The company specializes in cyber-protection and they are operating a product called Port-Dome at the port. This device has the ability to prevent, detect and alert of cyberattacks when it is installed in the operational systems that it is protecting, such as nautical control and monitoring systems, cranes and tugboats. The technology is presently in the process of successful integration in the advanced new Chinese crane of ZPMC that recently began to operate at the port. Since the crane can be operated remotely, it is vulnerable to external cyberattacks. The solution that the company installed in the crane prevents external cyberattacks from taking control of the crane.

    Deep Trading

The company offers technology that is based on artificial intelligence and deals with predicting future implications of historical and present data. A practical example of this is the ability that it provides to alert in advance of expected problems in cranes, so that it won't be necessary in the future to repair crane fractures, rather the problems will be prevented in advance. This allows for operational continuity over time.

    SpinFrame

The company produces a system that monitors vehicle damage by photographing vehicles from 360 degrees during the ship unloading process, in order to demonstrate to the importers at what stage the damage was caused – before their arrival at the port or in the port's parking lot, in order to avoid paying unnecessary compensation to importers.

    Eco Wave Power

The company supplies a system for energy production from sea waves, allowing the port to produce energy on its own. This contributes to the company's efforts, led by the Board of Directors, to make the port “greener". The port is also working on other channels, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, to produce its own energy, such as building a private power station at the port and advancing a project to setup PV solar devices that can produce electric energy from the absorption of sunlight.
