The Ashdod Port Company concludes a successful quarter in operational terms and reports an increase of 9.5% in the total traffic of containers in terms of TEU during the first quarter of 2008 as compared with the parallel quarter last year. During March 2008, a 7.8% increase was registered in the total containers traffic in terms of TEU compared with the month of March of last year.
During the first quarter of 2008, the total cargo traffic amounted to 4.16 million tons, a 13.3% increase in comparison with the first quarter of last year. During March 2008, the total cargo traffic in the port was 1.5 million tons, an increase of 16.7% compared with March of last year.
During the first quarter of 2008, 25,158 vehicles were unloaded, an increase of 102% compared with the first quarter last year. In March of 2008, 10,568 vehicles were unloaded, an increase of 261% compared with March of last year. Additionally, delay times were reduced by 44% compared to the first quarter of last year.
According to Shuki Sagis, CEO of Ashdod Port Company, “the first quarter of 2008 was an excellent quarter for the Port of Ashdod. We continue the trend of improving customer service and increased efficiency and we observe impressive operational achievements, including, reduction of delay times of ships of about 45%. The congestion surcharge is currently at a lower rate than that of the Haifa Port and we will continue to the efforts until its total elimination, since there are no delays justifying imposing the surcharge.”
